About

The Story So Far

You may not have heard of David Reynolds, but you’ve probably heard his music.  Reynolds’ music has underscored the action in big-budget studio blockbusters including Wanted, Get Smart, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and G-Force, where he has written alongside A-list composers Danny Elfman and Trevor Rabin.  He has also contributed music to several of Disney’s hit television series including Hannah MontanaAnt Farm, and Dog with a Blog.  In addition to those, Reynolds has scored more than 35 projects including numerous award-winning indies, projects for HBO and Sony Pictures, television series, documentaries and shorts.

In addition to film and television music, Reynolds has composed for high-profile trailers such as the Star Trek Into Darkness International Trailer - a 2014 Golden Trailer, Best Action Trailer nominee, and created advertising music for clients that include McDonalds, Burger King, Ford Trucks, Target Stores, Arby's, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Polaris, Lee Jeans, Norwest Banks, and General Mills.  He has also been commissioned to write concert music for the internationally acclaimed Debussy Trio, and collaborated with artist Lexi Leon and legendary record producer Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, Kiss...) on Eternal Descent - a graphic novel inspired project.

At the urging of director Gregory Ruzzin, who teaches at the Loyola Marymount University School of Film and Television, Reynolds created and now annually presents at Loyola, a 9 hour graduate-level guest lecture series on film music and working with a composer.  He has also been a featured presenter at the Interplay Drum conference in Las Vegas.

David Reynolds lives and works in Los Angeles.

David Reynold’s professionalism is only surpassed by his breath of scoring ability. “Dorfman” (2011) required a unique blend between indie quirkiness and romantic comedy polish. David was able to navigate this balance admirably.

Dave Reynolds is a composer of enormous range. I needed heart tugging, lump-in-the-throat scoring that rose to epic tragedy for “The Paradise Virus.” The riveting “ virus” theme itself was an unexpected bonus. Pulse-pounding heroic rhythms were needed to drive the torpedo battles of “Tides of War.” On top of that I got a doom-laden chorale that pointed up the tragedy of war. That’s what you get with Dave. He knits your scenes together, and finds the emotional heart of your movie. I’m looking forward to our next collaboration.”

One of my fondest memories directing “George B.” was the time spent working with Dave in his studio, listening to his music, dreaming, and watching as he magically, yes musically, traced the emotional journey of our characters. What fun it was to find a kindred spirit, devoted—as we all try to be—to his craft, to the task at hand, not paying lip service to this notion of “film as a collaborative art”, but really wanting to work together, with the director, the producers, the editor, to arrive at something we all loved. With Dave it’s not about ego. It’s about getting it right, telling the story, writing great music. I can’t wait until we get to do it again.

As a film director I can’t think of a better composer to work with. Dave has a great understanding of musical styles, history, and composition and brings great imagination and creativity to the film scoring process. He’s a great collaborator and gifted musician and composer. At this point I can’t imagine NOT having Dave’s music in my films.

Low-budget movies — in our case, ultra-low-budget movies — live or die based on their soundtrack. David Reynolds’ amazing talent brought our two features to spectacular life. His music is outstanding and always exactly what is needed. He’s a gem.
